Calcium Chloride

TGI supplies calcium chloride in every commercial form, flake, pellet, powder, and liquid, for oilfield brines, dust control, de-icing, and concrete. Packing runs from sacks to bulk, and orders start at one ton.

The material

What it does

It pulls water from the air

Calcium chloride starts absorbing atmospheric moisture at roughly 30 percent relative humidity, where rock salt sits inert until about 75 percent. That gap is why it holds an unpaved surface damp through a dry month, and why it starts working on cold, dry pavement without waiting for traffic to wet it.

It gives off heat as it dissolves

Dissolution is strongly exothermic. The brine it forms is warmed by its own reaction rather than chilled, which is the opposite of sodium chloride. The same property is a process consideration in a mixing tank, where the order and rate of addition matter.

It stays liquid to about minus 60 F

Three ions per formula unit depress the freezing point harder than a two-ion salt at equal molar concentration. The calcium chloride and water system reaches a eutectic near minus 60 F, the lowest of the common commercial chlorides.

It carries density into a brine

Clear calcium chloride brines are blended to a target density for completion and workover work, which is why the oilfield buys it by the weight it delivers rather than by the pound of product.

Applications

Oilfield, dust control, de-icing, and concrete

01

Oilfield brines and drilling fluids

Clear completion and workover brines blended to a target density, single salt or in combination. Calcium chloride also runs as a component in drilling fluid systems, and lighter dry grades feed on-site brine makeup where mixing capacity exists at the location.

02

Dust control and road stabilization

On unpaved roads, haul roads, lease roads, and yards, calcium chloride holds moisture in the running surface long after untreated aggregate has dried out. The damp surface binds fines instead of losing them, which cuts aggregate replacement, blading frequency, and airborne dust.

  • +Haul roads, lease roads and yards
  • +Base stabilization and compaction aid
  • +Flake, pellet or applied as liquid

03

De-icing and anti-icing

Calcium chloride works down to about minus 25 F in common winter maintenance practice, and the heat of dissolution helps it cut into a bonded layer rather than sitting on top of it. It runs as a straight dry application, as liquid for anti-icing ahead of an event, and as a pre-wetting agent on rock salt.

  • +Pre-wetting rock salt at the spinner
  • +Low-temperature winter maintenance

04

Cement and concrete

A set accelerator for cold-weather placement, shortening set time and building early strength when ambient temperature would otherwise stall the pour and hold up the schedule. Supplied to ready-mix producers, precast plants, and contractors.

  • +Early strength development
  • +Ready-mix and precast supply

Forms

Flake, pellet, powder, and liquid

Flake
Thin plates with high surface area. Dissolves fast, which suits tank makeup and any job with a mixing vessel.
Pellet
Round and free-flowing. Meters cleanly through mechanical spreaders and augers, resists bridging, and drives down through a layer rather than scattering across it.
Powder and granular
For blending and for processes that want the material to go into solution as part of a batch.
Liquid
Ready to apply or to dose, supplied where the receiving end has tank capacity.

Packaging and supply

From one ton

Most of this market starts at a full truckload.

  • +Bags
  • +Bulk bags and supersacks
  • +Drums
  • +Totes
  • +Bulk truck
  • +Rail car
